Newspaper Funnies
So, the Game Store/Restaraunt that I routinely hang out at likes to stock the St. Louis Post Dispatch. Now, being a bit of a schmoe, I've never been a big fan of reading the paper. But I'm a HUGE fan of the funnies. For a long time I thought the art of the comic strip had been forgotten, and that most comic strips that got into the newspaper were boring, watered down crap. Not true. Here's my List of Newspaper Strips that Rock My World:
Get Fuzzy- A talking cat, a talking dog, and a slacker share an apartment. The cat's insane and greedy, the human's the straight man, and the dog's just trying to survive. Great art and very funny. Almost guaranteed to get a chuckle out of me.
Dilbert- Y'wanna know why Dilbert was so popular a few years back? It's cause it's funny. Period. I've never worked in a cubicle, and yet I get a big kick out of this strip.
Pearls Before Swine- Don't let the simplistic, almost cute, artwork fool you. This strip is clever and more than a little acidic. A strip that can be very much grounded in real life one minute and absolutely surreal the next, Pearls is freaking brilliant. How good is it? I showed Bro a strip yesterday that made him laugh his ass off. And Bro doesn't give a crap about newspaper funnies.
Mutts- So. I have a bit of a weakness for cute. Those of you who read my comics know this. Mutts is so cute it makes my teeth hurt. It's my guilty pleasure comic.
Non Sequitor- Nice art, and typically features solid socio/political commentary. Plus, the strip can be kinda surreal from time to time.
Doonsebury- Y'know how I knew I was an adult? It was the day that Doonsebury made sense to me. When this complex, long running, socio/poltical comic went from being "That crappy strip where everyone has squinty eyes and big noses" to "This is hi-larious!" I knew I was an old man. One of the longer running strips in the newspaper, and still one of the funniest and most socially relevent.
I would mention the Boondocks as well, but the St. Louis Post Dispatch dropped it for some reason.

When we remember there's a TV on Sunday nights, we usually catch Boondocks on Adult Swim. Good stuff. Usually, though, I'm on BF2 slaughtering my foes like LEROOOOOOOYYYY JENKINNNNS
Get Fuzzy
This is usally one of my staples everyother day. (I forget to read the comics for some reason a few days out of the week, and I work for a newspaper where I can read them for free.) Pretty funny, especially when Bucky is trying to scheme Satchel out of something.
Dilbert
I love this strip. I actually have one that I thought was hilarious taped into one of my sketchbooks, 'cause it fit me to a T. My favorite bit was when the company gave away glass-shard filled donuts as part of a marketing ploy. Funny stuff. I snatched the electronic versions so I'd have them always. Or until my computer melts.
Pearls Before Swine
I love this strip. I don't know if it's the resemblence to U.S. Acres or what, but the simplicity always makes me laugh. Probably my favorite to read, although my paper doesn't carry it. There's a link somewhere on the Net so one can read it everyday and catch up on back issues. It's really great when Pastis starts taking stabs at other strips. The few weeks that Pearls and Baby Blues went at it was pretty funny.
Mutts
I don't get into Mutts much. My cuteness is affected by Baby Blues a lot. It just seems to be one of those strips that I'm drawn to everyday, mostly because we carry not funny stuff.
Non Sequitor
Great. Funny. The Sunday's are the best.
Boondocks
Incredibly funny. I love the outright reverse racism and self-depricating humor. I think even pickle would like the strip. Probably not the Adult Swim cartoon.
We also carry a stip called Brevity. It can be funny and it can suck.
What happened to Garfield. Is it just that I grew up that I don't find the strip funny anymore. It absolutely blows now. And I used to love it as a kid.
I still say you outta grab a Sunday paper sometime and check out Opus. Breathead only runs it on Sunday's but it is High-larious. I should have a bunch of back copies if you want me to bring them to you.
